Abstract

A career in Observation Medicine provides a unique opportunity to gain experience in operations and leadership. You typically take on a Medical Director role and oversee the development and/or management of one or more units within a health system. This role entails a mix of clinical and administrative responsibilities, interaction with hospital leadership, overseeing a team of physicians and/or mid-level providers, cross-collaboration with other departments, and research. Due to the increasing prevalence of observation units, there is a high demand for trained Observation Medicine leaders. To meet this need, Observation Medicine fellowship programs have been developed which provide the necessary knowledge and skills for a successful career.
