Abstract

The paper firstly presents a survey of the most widely used structural systems and materials in Egypt and a classification of buildings according to the construction year and number of stories. Then, it introduces detailed information about housing administration and legislation of Egypt. The paper discusses the responsibility of code drafting, issuing and enforcing and demonstrates provisions taken for issuing building licenses and steps followed to guarantee proper engineering supervision during construction. Mitigation of building collapse and life loss is discussed through the investigation of steps followed to inspect, evacuate and repair the defected buildings. Finally, the paper presents a list of the most important conclusions.
