Abstract
The use of a combination of both computer and physical model studies to assess the scour of a new bridge to replace the 30-year-old Bonner Bridge across North Carolina's Outer Banks is described. An accurate assessment of scour is a key element in the design of the structure, which is in a region regularly battered by hurricanes and storms. Potential scour depths for the bridge were determined and their effects on normal loadings and extreme events were evaluated. Pier scour calculations and the two-dimensional hydraulic analysis are discussed. Results of physical model studies are presented.
