Abstract
The correct constitutive relations of general linear media must be properly decided in the time domain because causality is frequently a major casualty of frequency-domain manipulations. We show here that the widely used symmetries found by O'Dell for magnetoelectric media came from non-causal analysis. We also show that the correct constitutive relations must obey Post's constraint.
