Abstract
The emergence of decision support systems, artificial intelligence, and microcomputers in the information systems area provides us with some new insights for the design and operation of productive systems. In this paper, the authors illustrate how an intelligent microcomputer-based decision support system (DSS) was developed to solve line balancing problems. The conceptual framework, technical issues, and minute details for effectively designing such a system are addressed. Directions for future research are also discussed.
