Abstract
One method of deep reading that can accompany a research project is document analysis - a systematic process of reviewing, interpreting, and assessing various printed and electronic source material. Documents bear witness to the past and assist researchers in grappling with the power and authority of dominant narratives. Secondly, as it relates to Black life, documents engender new questions, recover suppressed narratives, and provide a rich source of supplementary data to research. Furthermore, documents generate a trail that can outline a topic or ideas development. Finally, document analysis corroborates findings and other evidence sources. This chapter outlines holistic document analysis; an approach to deep reading that can help researchers dialogue or make meaning of a text.
