Abstract
Habitual use of beverage alcohol in such a way as to cause serious health and psychiological problems has been the subject of considerable investigation in behavioral research laboratories for some time. Our objective in this presentation is to review this work as it relates to the persistence of drink-seeking behavior and high rates of relapse following treatment, phenomena so frequently observed that they have been incorporated as part of the 'alcohol dependence syndrome'.
