Optimization of air cathode used in one- chamber microbial fuel cells

The effects of Pt-loading, electrode structure, and bio-film on cathode performance were studied. There were no peaks in both the anodic and cathodic part of cyclic voltammograms for all the electrodes. Both anodic current and cathode current increased as the Pt loading increased, which was related to the porous structure of the electrode. The performance of cathode always increased with Pt loading but not significantly within a Pt-loading range of 0.1-1 mg/sq cm. The electrode with 1 mg/cm Pt was only 0.035 v higher than that for the electrode with 0.1 mg/sq cm Pt at a current density of 0.1 mA/cm. Similar results were obtained for the electrodes using PTFE bound to the electrode which produced a more hydrophobic electrode surface.
