Oral Medications in Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Allergic rhinitis (AR) presents a pervasive challenge to individuals globally, impacting their quality of life and economic productivity. Managing allergic rhinitis necessitates a multifaceted approach encompassing education, pharmacotherapy, and allergen immunotherapy. Within this framework, this chapter examines the pivotal role of oral medications in providing symptom relief. Through a comprehensive review, we dissect the landscape of conventional and nonconventional oral therapies available for AR management. Conventional options, such as antihistamines, leukotrienes receptor antagonists, corticosteroids, and decongestants, form the cornerstone of treatment, offering relief from nasal symptoms and associated manifestations affecting the eyes, ears, and throat. In parallel, nonconventional therapies, including probiotics, vitamin supplements, honey, and complementary alternative medications like Chinese herbal remedies, are reviewed as potential adjuncts to conventional approaches. By exploring the efficacy, mechanisms of action, and potential side effects of these oral medications, this chapter aims to provide clinicians and researchers with a comprehensive understanding of oral therapies in the treatment of AR.
