Abstract

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head is caused by a variety of pathologies that ultimately results in ischemia of bone and cellular death. Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging is a widely used modality to assess the extent of femoral head, physeal and metaphyseal involvement, enabling depiction of changes at the earliest stages so that appropriate treatment can be instituted. MR imaging also plays a critical role in assessing the progression of disease as well as posttreatment responses. A thorough understanding of MR techniques and optimal imaging protocols are crucial in the radiologic evaluation.
