Abstract

When subjected to complex loads during manufacturing processes, aligned fiber composites respond in two different modes: large scale viscous shearing and small scale elastic dilatation. Viscous shearing is important during forming operations; elastic dilatation can take place during various consolidating flows. The purpose of this paper is to outline the physical nature of these deformations, and to present constitutive equations for modelling their behavior. Experimental results for simulated processing conditions will be given.
