Oxidation and transport phenomena in the reaction-bonded aluminum oxide (RBAO) process

Abstract

The RBAO process involves compact oxidation, alpha alumina phase transformation and densification. Homogeneous compact oxidation is critical for densification and is controlled by heat transfer. Our studies show the process is controlled by convective heat transfer. The estimated effective thermal conductivity and heat transfer coefficient of 60% dense RBAO compact containing 55 vol% α-Al2O3 and 45 vol% Al are 0.65 W/m°K and 11.2 W/m2°K, respectively. Low heat transfer from the surface results in too rapid oxidation and the core-shell oxidation of the compact. Based on experiments and process modeling, we show how to obtain homogeneous oxidation of RBAO compacts.
