Abstract

A system has been developed which utilizes nitrogen oxides and dioxygen to break down and oxidize polyethene. The principal nongaseous products are α,ω-diacids, mainly succinic, glutaric, adipic and pimelic acids. Product distributions were analyzed by NMR spectroscopy and gas chromatography. Investigation into the manner in which the polyethene is oxidized and the nature of the product distributions is also reported.
