Abstract
The importance of food packaging for food safety and quality is discussed. A review of mechanical, barrier, thermal, and optical properties of packaging materials is presented. Edible and bio-based materials for food packaging applications are also reviewed. Formation of rigid, semi-rigid, and flexible packages is described. Package integrity and food-package interactions are discussed with emphasis on food safety related examples. Packaging needs of various thermal, non-thermal, and other food processing technologies are reviewed. Current and future trends in food packaging such as active and intelligent packaging, nanotechnology, and traceability, are addressed.
