Abstract

The paper reviews theoretical aspects of the packing and sintering of binary mixtures. Compared with theories for the sintering of fine-grain powders, the theories for binary mixtures require far greater attention to the influences of the geometry of packing, to geometric constraints, to local stresses, and to the influences of compositional inhomogeneities within the body. The binary systems considered are those for which the coarse particles are much larger than the fine particles (by more than an order of magnitude). Only solid state sintering processes are considered.
