Abstract
The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) or the recovery unit in an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) is a very important part of the ASC and the patient’s surgical experience. A well run PACU ensures efficiency, safety, cost effectiveness and patient satisfaction. A number of factors play a role in PACU efficiency including: PACU design, number of patient slots, staffing ratios, patient acuity and social factors. It is imperative for the ASC personnel to be familiar with phases of recovery and steps that can be taken to expedite this process. Patients should be discharged as soon as they meet discharge criteria. Common issues that cause delays in the PACU should be anticipated ahead of time and managed preemptively.
