Abstract
In situ observations obtained at the ground by a fleet of instrumented vehicles within the forward-flank downdraft (FFD) outflow were used to investigate whether any relationship exists between the thermodynamic characteristics of the outflow and low-level mesocyclogenesis and/or tornadogenesis. The data were obtained within both tornadic and nontornadic supercells during the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment (VORTEX) from 1994 to 1995 and in smaller field campaigns during the 1997-99 period. It was found that the bouyancy gradients and horizontal vorticity generation were larger in the sample of nontornadic rather than tornadic supercells.
