Abstract
Disorders of the pediatric disc space are infrequent and differ significantly from adult disc disease in demographics, presentation, radiographic findings, treatment, and outcomes. This chapter reviews the embryology and histology of the intervertebral disc in children and discusses the four major categories of disc disease: lumbar disc herniations, apophyseal (or limbus) fractures that involve the ring apophysis and the disc, disc space infections, and idiopathic juvenile intervertebral disc calcifications (JIDC).
