Abstract
Acute hematologic-oncologic problems may be separated into those that demand immediate assessment, diagnosis, and therapy and those that require attention but are not life threatening if treated appropriately. Both severe and commonly encountered hematologic-oncologic problems will be considered in this review. The article will be divided into discussions of hemorrhagic disorders; anemias, with a special emphasis on problems in patients with sickle cell disease; an approach to fever and infection in the immunocompromised child; and oncologic disorders that may be life threatening.
