Abstract

We report breech pressure measurements during the firing of an air cannon. We find that the pressure record is a useful and convenient diagnostic of the penetrator projectile motion during launch - supplementing or replacing beam- or wire-breaking speedometers and on-board accelerometers. With little effort, launch speed can be measured with a 2σ error of 1.75 m s^-1 or better than 5%.
