Abstract

Freshmen and sophomore engineering students at the Penn State Abington College have designed and constructed autonomous mobile robots that competed in the 1997 Trinity College Fire-Fighting Robot Contest. One such robot, RTFM, received the first place award. The mobile robot was designed as a partial requirement for an honor's robotics course which covers real-time programming techniques, sensors, microcontroller interfacing, and robot navigation. The robot was constructed from LEGO building materials and controlled by a Handy board 6811 controller board. Mobile robot design is a highly interdisciplinary, collaborative, and hands-on activity which draws from electrical, mechanical, computer, and systems engineering, and serves as an effective learning tool.
