Abstract

A time dependent axisymmetric finite element formulation of an earth-tube system is used to evaluate its thermal performance characteristics. The parameters included in this system are: pipe diameter, pipe length, initial soil moisture concentration and temperature and ambient air temperature. Design curves for both heating and cooling are presented. A simple illustrative example for swine farrowing facility shows that the earth tube system is cost effective, and the system payback period is less than 5 years.
