Abstract

The Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC I) work group defines acute limb ischemia as “any sudden decrease in limb perfusion causing a potential threat to limb viability” (Norgren et al., J Vasc Surg 45(Suppl S):S5-S67, 2007). Diagnosis and management of patients with acute limb ischemia require considerable clinical judgment. If not managed appropriately, acute limb ischemia can result in major amputation or even death. Early recognition, prompt diagnosis, and urgent treatment are the key elements for achieving a successful outcome in patients with an acutely ischemic limb.
