Abstract

Play should be seen from various perspectives to understand and to use it effectively within early childhood care and education (ECCE). This chapter presents information about play and ECCE in order to assist teachers and others to better understand and use play appropriately with young children. The perspectives on play begin by first looking at some core notions important in the study of play and then by considering developmental and cultural concepts. The chapter then discusses theories important for understanding play and early childhood education, and presents applications to curriculum and practice in the field. It also aims to provide a deeper conceptual understanding of play, the relations among development, culture, and the experiencing child, and the relations of play with learning and with teaching. Recommendations are given to stimulate further reflection and inquiry about play in ECCE.
