abstract = "Transitions from equilibrium δ-ferrite to nonequilibrium austenite mode of solidification were investigated in a Fe-0.28C - 0.45Mn - 3.7Al (wt.%) steel weld under rapid laser welding and gas tungsten arc spot welding conditions. In laser welds, the transition from δ-ferrite to austenite phase selection did not occur due to geometry of the weld pool restricting the liquid-solid interface velocity below a critical level. In spot-weld, the liquid-solid interface velocity increased above a critical velocity due to sudden arc motion. This increase in the interface velocity lead to nonequilibrium austenite solidification and this phenomenon was confirmed with in-situ time-resolved X-ray diffraction investigation with Synchrotron radiation.",
