Abstract

The parent coal nitrogen distribution in the devolatilization/pyrolysis products of a wide range of coal ranks and in a variety of heating conditions is examined. The mass fraction distribution of coal nitrogen in char, tar and light gas products is observed to vary significantly with chemical characteristics of the parent coal and conditions of heating. A rank-dependent phenomenological model is postulated to interpret the results.
