Phosphorylated phosphazenes as flame retardant polymers and polymer additives

Aryloxyphosphazenes, both cyclic and polymeric, that bear pendent phosphate and phosphonate groups were synthesized. Phosphorylation of poly[bis(p-hydroxyphenoxy)phosphazene] with diphenyl chlorophosphate yielded a well-defined, soluble elastomer with excellent thermal stability but not optimum flame resistance. On the other hand, phosphorylated cyclic trimers, synthesized as model compounds, can be used as an oligomeric flame retardant additive of polystyrene. Its flame retardant properties are slightly better than those of triphenyl phosphate, and it has a far lower plasticizing effect on the polymer.
