N2 - Multiphoton detachment and intensity dependent photodetachment threshold shifts have been studied using fluorine or chlorine negative ions stored in a Penning ion trap. Third, second, and first harmonic light pulses from a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser have been used to study one-, two-, and three-photon detachment from F-. Absolute cross sections have been measured in order to compare with theoretical results. In a separate experiment, a shift in the photodetachment threshold of Cl- was observed in the presence of the 1064 nm wavelength radiation. The measured shift is smaller than that expected from the ponderomotive potential. Recent calculations of the dynamic polarizabilities of Cl and Cl- show that these contributions to the shift should be significantly smaller than that due to the ponderomotive potential.
