Abstract

Most Cucurbitaceae species possess characteristic tendrils and are able to climb, a key innovation present in many angiosperms and some other land plants that facilitates growth upward along other plants to reach the forest canopy for photosynthesis. This study provides a phylogenetic framwork of Cucurbitaceae and reveals dramatic changes in cucurbit genomes and morphology that together with paleo-climate upheavals might have contributed to cucurbit biodiversity.
