Abstract

Conventional pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) systems involve the use of non-pulsatile perfusion which is non-physiologic. Currently, all pulsatile pumps used in clinical CPB procedures produce inadequate quality of pulsatility in regards to ejection time, pulse pressure, and stroke volume. An alternate Pediatric Physiological Pulsatile Pump (PPPP) system is designed to satisfy the need for physiologic pulsatile perfusion during CPB for neonates and infants. This pump has a unique two chamber pumping mechanism. Both chambers are hydraulically driven with a `floating diaphragm'.
