Abstract

A piezoelectric control mechanism to tune lasers made of polymeric chiral sculptured thin films (STF) is discussed. A polymeric chiral STF is coupled with a piezoelectric layer. The physical dimensions of the piezoelectric layer change when an electric field is impressed across it. The dimensional changes of the piezoelectric layer result in dimensional changes of the polymeric chiral STF. Accordingly, the nanostructure of the polymeric chiral STF is modified so that the passage of light across it is affected.
