Abstract

Plant signals play diverse roles to the many organisms that surround them. One facet of this is their ability to manipulate organisms in a manner that protects them or harms herbivores that feed on them. This relationship has more recently been recognized to occur belowground. Here, we discuss these belowground interactions, techniques and findings, focussing on entomopathogenic nematodes and soil nematode chemotaxis in response to plant root cues and potential implications for agroecosystems and fundamental concepts in ecological trophic cascades.
