Abstract
Plasma calcitonin was measured in a 38-yr-old female patient with metastatic carcinoma of the thyroid, 3 yr after total thyroidectomy. There was a diffuse increase in skeletal density as well as an elevation in plasma calcitonin concentration. This patient had 11 pregnancies with 9 live births. At least 4 of the 9 children are believed to have had osteopetrosis. Two of the 4 have died but plasma calcitonin activity was measured in the 2 surviving children and was not found to be elevated. A relationship between circulating calcitonin excess and osteopetrosis cannot be substantiated. A genetic relationship between medullary carcinoma and osteopetrosis deserves investigation.
