Abstract
A recently published report on measurements from a single-transmitter dual-Doppler radar network (Wurman, 1994) indicate such a system to be feasible and practical for observing various types of storms. If a bistatic receiver can be used for measuring Doppler velocity, then with some modifications it should also be possible to obtain simultaneous bistatic polarimetric measurements. However, the answer are still unclear as to the type of information such measurements can provide, the possibility to differentiate rain from hail, or graupel from snowflakes, as well as the possibility to obtain quantitative information such as mean size, etc. In order to shed light on these issues the authors have begun a computational study of the bistatic scattering characteristics of various types of hydrometeors. The preliminary results presented here are for single scattering from raindrops and hailstones at a frequency of 2.75 GHz.
