Abstract

In this paper we report the result of a recent study which demonstrated that birefringent nonlinearities of nematic liquid crystals could be utilized for polarization switching via laser induced stimulated orientational scattering process. The laser-LC interaction geometry is depicted in figure 1a. A linearly polarized electronically shuttered Argon laser pulse [100 ms] is incident at normal on a planar nematic liquid crystal (NLC) film either as an extraordinary (e-) or an ordinary (o-) wave. The LC used is E7 [EM Chemicals], and is 200 μm thick.
