Abstract
Pore formation and alloying elements loss are important concerns in laser welding of automotive aluminum alloys. This paper investigates the influence of various welding parameters on pore formation and magnesium loss during continuous wave Nd:YAG laser welding of alloys 5182 and 5754. It was found that the instability of the keyhole during welding was the dominant cause of pore formation while hydrogen rejection played an insignificant role. Significant magnesium loss occurred during welding. However, pore formation and magnesium loss could be controlled by optimizing welding speed and laser beam defocusing. The defocusing of the laser beam greatly affected the absorption of energy, the weld pool geometry, pore formation, and composition change.
