Portable Laser Diode based Multispectral Photoacoustic and Ultrasound Imaging System for Point-of-Care Screening Applications

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

We present a portable pulsed laser diode–based dual-modality photoacoustic and ultrasound (PLD-PAUS) imaging system for handheld multiparametric vascular screening in real-time. The system integrates a multiwavelength pulsed laser diode excitation source with a compact ultrasound data acquisition platform. Deep-tissue photoacoustic imaging performance was validated using chicken tissue phantoms. An atherosclerosis-mimicking phantom was used to validate the capability of the PLD-PAUS system in estimating of blood oxygen saturation and detecting cholesterol-rich plaque. Imaging in-vivo rodent abdominal vasculature validated high-contrast volumetric vascular imaging and quantitative assessment of vascular reactivity at mesoscopic depths. These results demonstrate the feasibility of the PLD-PAUS system for assessment of structural, functional, and molecular vascular biomarkers.
