Abstract
Excessive voltage transients in mine power systems can deteriorate the dielectric material in transformers and cables. A knowledge of the transients can be obtained by measuring them with available recorders. However, commercially available transient recorders are not suited for use in mine environments. The transient detector described in this report can measure the rise time, pulse width, and peak value. These parameters were chosen because they correlate quite well with the degree of insulation damage. The output is recorded on a digital thermal printer. The digital logic uses CMOS, and analog circuits are designed to minimize power drain. The detector is used with a voltage divider to connect to the mine power system. This paper concludes with recommendations on the in-mine application of the portable transient detector.
