Abstract

Postoperative hypoparathyroidism/hypocalcemia is the most prevalent complication following thyroid and parathyroid surgeries. Endocrine surgeons should be cognizant of patient and surgical risk factors for postoperative hypoparathyroidism/hypocalcemia. The clinical spectrum ranges from mild symptoms to life-threatening complications. The vast majority of cases are temporary and resolve within days to several weeks, but hypoparathyroidism can be prolonged and even permanent. The mainstay of treatment is calcium and vitamin D supplementation with interval monitoring of calcium and PTH serum levels.
