N2 - It is clear that uncertainities exist in our understanding of the effects of sludge spreading on the human food chain. But it is important to realize that no sludge disposal method is risk free. A balance perspective on risk assessment must be communicated to the public. Because of the metals, toxic organics, and pathogens is sewage sludge, concern over food chain contamination is justified. However, these hazards must be evaluated in reference to our overall exposure to risk. 11 refs.
