Principles of Comprehensive Approach to Pain Management in Patients with the Disease of Addiction

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Chronic non-cancer pain often co-occurs with alcohol/drug addiction, posing clinical challenges and dilemmas related to the management of pain in a manner that provides adequate pain control while minimizing the risk of relapse. Increasing utilization of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder (OUD) additionally complicates pain management in many patients. This chapter will outline an approach to pain management in patients who have co-occurring addiction, with an emphasis on those treated with MAT for OUD.
