Promotion of family recreation for a nature-based destination

The promotion of intergenerational family recreation in a nature-based tourism destination could be an effective vehicle in the provision of a healthy youth development. Nature-based recreation participation in particular often offers opportunities for a family to grow together and maintain its cohesiveness. The purpose of this study is to explore the factors associated with the motivation to visit a nature-based destination for family recreation. A total of 1282 surveys were administrated and data were analyzed. The results of the study indicated that there is a relationship between the characteristics of visitation and the motivation for family recreation in a natural tourism destination. Travel distance, education background, marital status, visiting status, and group type are significant predictors of the motivation for family recreation. Further, the study revealed that travelers with children reported less satisfaction of their visitation than those without children. Research limitations and implications are discussed at the end.
