Chan, MD, Box 498, MCV Station, Richmond, VA 23298-0498. 9/0/16788 calculated glomerular filtration rate between 20 ml/min/ 1.73 m 2 (0.33 ml/sec) and 75 ml/min/1.73 m 2 (1.25 ml/ sec), are eligible for entry into the control period. This age range was chosen to avoid both of the rapid growth periods of children--before 11/2 years of age and during adolescence-and also to avoid the use of recumbent length measurements, which are not comparable to the standing heights measured in the study. The changes in GFR characteristic of the first 1 tk years of life also are avoided. Entry of patients at a GFR of 75/ml/min/1.73 m 2 is justified because of the need to obtain new data on children with early chronic renal insufficiency during the control period.
