Abstract

In recent years, increasing research has focused on the development and commercialization of fuel cell systems for primary or auxiliary power for stationary, portable, and automotive systems. A basic overview of PEM fuel cell components and operation is given, including recent work at the Penn State Electrochemical Engine Center (ECEC). The state of the art in design and application, as well as the main technological challenges that must be overcome for the hydrogen-fed PEM fuel cell and the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) are addressed.
