Abstract

Pulmonary emboli usually arise from the deep venous system of the lower extremities and have an increased incidence in hospitalized patients in general. The chest radiograph is normal or shows nonspecific findings (such as atelectasis and small pleural effusion) in most patients with pulmonary embolism. There are specific findings that may offer clues. CT scanning is today the most widely used test to confirm pulmonary embolism. Ventilation-Perfusion scans can also be used.
