Abstract
We compute the quadrupole dispersion contribution to the adsorption potential of non-polar atoms. Two methods are used. One assumes a perfect induced image. The other applies perturbation theory to treat surface plasmon fluctuations interacting with quadrupolar fluctuations. The resulting interaction (-C5z-5 can be important near the adatom′s equilibrium position.
