Abstract

The objective is to review the principles of quantitative, mechanistic modelling as applied to the environmental sciences and to existing simulation models in soil science. Some pioneering efforts in the development of quantitative mechanistic models of soil forming processes are also presented. There are ten chapters: thoughts on simulation and prediction with pedogenetic modelling; modelling soil solution, mineral formation and weathering; impact of spatial variability on interpretive modelling; a comprehensive framework for modelling soil genesis; measuring and modelling mineral weathering in an acid forest soil; developing and adapting soil process submodels for use in the pedodynamic ORTHOD model; quantitative modelling of soil forming processes in deserts with the CALDEP and CALGYP models; a general model for soil organic matter dynamics; and a special framework for integrating soil-landscape and pedogenetic models.
