Abstract

The goal of this article is to present a broad perspective on loop quantum gravity, a non-perturbative, background independent approach to the problem of unification of general relativity and quantum physics, based on a specific theory of quantum Riemannian geometry. The chapter is addressed to non-experts. Therefore, the emphasis is on underlying ideas, conceptual issues and the overall status of the program rather than mathematical details and associated technical subtleties. This review complements that by Martin Bojowald which focusses on applications of quantum geometry to cosmology.
