Abstract
When I was invited to write a chapter comparing the experiences of lesbians to those of older nonlesbian women in academia, I found myself with more questions than facts or opinions. What should be the definition of “older women”-at what age do women cross that boundary? Are the issues they face the same ones any woman might encounter in her academic career, or are there additional ones particular to women in this group? Finally, have their experiences been similar to, or very different from, other female subgroups within academia-in this case, lesbians?.
