The word "radical" has its origins in the Latin word radicalis, meaning "of roots" or "root." In social and political circles, something radical is seen as revolutionary and as an attempt to change existing social structures. Radical protest thus begins at the grassroots, with people (rather than the authorities) who attempt to change norms by raising objections to the status quo.
